Rob Howell is a painter from North Carolina with deep roots in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. His art is a reflection of the landscapes around him. These landscapes are given a vernacular he builds with bold imagery with an all over mapping of abstract icons-much like the distinct dialect of the mountains. His family history and unique culture go back for more than 250 years in this beautiful, rugged and distinctive land-the oldest range of mountains on earth. Attending UNC-Chapel Hill, he concentrated on painting in the Fine Arts. He was the first student to have a solo show in the Morehead North Gallery of the university. He spent many years painting in DUMBO-living in one of the original artist's lofts there. He has consistently worked on a variety of projects outside of the studio from being an early A.I.D.S. activist to fashion work for Ralph Lauren. He still has a 74 acre farm in the mountains of NC. Rob currently resides on the Upper East Side in New York City. He enjoys the peacefulness there between his journeys to the mountains and back.
